Literacy Connections: Sahil Hogarty and Medcast

Sahil Hogarty, a sophomore at Davidson College, comes from a family of doctors. He feels blessed to continue his family’s legacy in the medical field. When his mom, Dr. Suneya Hogarty suggested that Sahil seek out a summer internship with Literacy Connections, he walked in with an open mind not knowing much about literacy in the community.

Sahil’s summer provided a trifecta of experiences including shadowing doctors, tutoring literacy students, and bringing it all together in a Literacy Connections’ podcast called MedCast. MedCast is a series of nine conversations with medical professionals from a broad spectrum of healthcare services in our community. Through these conversations he explored the perspectives and impact that low literacy has on access to healthcare, patient compliance, maintaining good health, and the financial strain low literacy has on healthcare resources.

Shockingly, national statistics show that only 12% of our population have the health literacy to manage their health well. Thanks to our local health care professionals for bringing awareness to the importance of health literacy and advocating for more to be done to address this issue.

We are proud to bring you MedCast beginning in January 2023, and we hope to continue these important conversations on health literacy in the future. Watch for an announcement on our social media and website about how to access MedCast.

The Board of Directors, staff, and students at Literacy Connections wish you and your family a warm and wonderful holiday season!
