A Dirty Job and a Deeper Truth: By Ryan Lane

The sun hadn’t cleared the trees when we stepped into Daddy’s tobacco field.

The air was thick with humidity, and dew clung to our boots like syrup. As we cropped row after row, the sweet, pungent scent of fresh tobacco filled our noses—a smell I’ll never forget.

By midday, tar coated the hairs on our arms, turning them black and sticky. Dust mixed with sweat settled into every crease. Our clothes were soaked, heavy with effort. Cropping tobacco wasn’t just hard—it was dirty work.

Yet after scrubbing our skin raw at the end of the day, we felt clean again.

That’s what it’s like coming to Christ.

Life leaves us filthy—scarred by choices, stained by sin, burdened by shame. But Jesus offers something no one else can.

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” — Isaiah 1:18 (NIV)

Jesus doesn’t just rinse us off—He makes us new. When we surrender to Him:

  1. We are completely forgiven.

  2. We receive peace the world cannot offer.

  3. We gain eternal life and lasting purpose.

The old dirt may cling to our skin, but it doesn’t have to cling to our soul. In Christ, we are clean. In Him, we are home.
