Our Habitat: Is our habitat in good shape?

What kind of shape is our Habitat in? It’s a question I’ve asked myself a lot lately.

I’m not talking about my home, though new improvements are always under consideration.

I’m not even talking about Habitat for Humanity, though we are always working to increase the number of families we are serving in Wayne County.

No, I’m coming back to a broader idea of “our habitat” – our community.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, our habitat – the place we live – encompasses not just our immediate or everyday surroundings, but also everything around those. And while it’s true that the further out we go from our immediate habitats the less we may be impacted by things that occur, our everyday habitats are certainly shaped by what happens here in our community.

And so as 2018 starts, I am intrigued by a new study that will be released in January taking a close look at issues of poverty, affordable housing, hunger and more in our community.

Right now, I don’t have any of the details about what this study will include or conclude. And I don’t know exactly what will happen after it’s released. But I do believe that it might be a great jumping off point to begin a community-wide discussion about these issues and how we can all come together to solve them.

That’s at least the ultimate goal. So be on the lookout and when you see it and hear about it, engage with it. After all, it’s our habitat.
