North Carolina Regulator fines Blue Cross $3.6M for Customer Glitches
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's insurance regulator is fining Blue Cross nearly $4 million for a morass of customer problems earlier this year including overbilling, incorrect policies, and inability to verify coverage.
Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin on Thursday fined Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina $3.6 million, which the company agreed to pay in a settlement.
Beginning in January, customers of the state's largest health insurer complained of billing problems, incorrect policy cancellation notices and missing policy renewal notices that explained coverage changes.
Blue Cross cited technical glitches as the reason for the problems facing consumers buying individual policies, most of them through the Affordable Care Act.
The company said it was sorry and has been working on addressing the issues.
