Wayne County English Teacher Launches New Comic Book Series

With his first comic book release, writer/artist Gene E. Willoughby, II introduces us to the post-apocalyptic world of The Last Age. In this first issue, "hero maker" Lioness Spacefarer has just accepted a contract to build a new kind of superhero for the World Capitols. There's only one small problem. To complete the job, she's going to need a relic created long ago by a member of the legendary Sunstrom family.

The author of superhero thriller The Sunstroms, Willoughby is a high school English teacher who has been committed to promoting literacy throughout the course of his 17-year career. Planned as a 5 - chapter comic book series for ages 13 and up, The Last Age is an expression of his love for visual storytelling. "There's no doubt in my mind that comics and graphic novels have everything to do with the fact that I'm an avid reader today," Willoughby says. "The Last Age is a story that has been inside me for at least a decade, and I'm excited to share my work with the public."

Willoughby is a graduate of East Carolina University with a BA in English and Writing. He also earned an MFA in Creative Writing at Full Sail University. He will be signing copies of The Last Age: Chapter One at the Wayne County Public Library on Feb. 5 from 4-8 pm.
