Remembering Jane Rustin: A Founding Voice of Literacy Connections

Literacy Connections mourns the loss of Jane Rustin, a founding board member, longtime champion, and dear friend of our organization.

When Literacy Connections was created in 2010, Jane was there from the beginning. She helped establish the partnership with Wayne County that made our organization possible and, as Director of the Wayne County Public Library, gave our first Executive Director a home in the library.

But Jane didn’t simply help us get started. She helped shape who we would become.

When our organization needed a fundraiser, Jane brought forward an idea centered around books, authors, and wine. With no budget, but plenty of creativity and determination, Reading Between the Wines was born. It remains our signature fundraiser today.

Jane served on our Board for more than a decade and remained a faithful supporter for years afterward.

Fittingly, Jane also shared the joy of reading herself. Her Story Time Online reading of Where the Wild Things Are continues to be shared with children and families throughout our community.

We are deeply grateful that Jane Rustin is part of our story.

THANK YOU, Jane. We will carry your story forward.
