Jonathan Greeson, CFP®

I receive government assistance because of my disability.  My life goal is to get off of the system eventually.  It is a great resource that helps many families, but the limitations can be disheartening.

Recently, I was reviewed, which is like an audit on your life.  They check everything from your bank account to your burial plot.  No, I’m not exaggerating.  Pikeville’s town manager actually had to find the paperwork for our family plots.

Of course, the case worker was just doing her job.  She was professional and kind.  Fortunately, I was approved for another year.

My frustration is with the system itself.  My case was flagged because my Social Security check increased by $5.00 per month.  That extra $60.00 I’ll receive in 2026, ironically paid by the system, almost kicked me off of the system!

I’ve found many similarities between the benefit programs for seniors and the programs for people with disabilities.  When you retire, do you want to live like this?  Yes, by retirement planning, you’ll probably not qualify for programs, like Medicaid.

However, you could have what all Americans want; the freedom to choose.  Imagine spending your golden years enjoying life, setting your own schedule, and not worrying about your life being turned upside down because of an extra $60.00.  Email me!
