As we in Wayne County and across the nation celebrate 250 years of independence, it is a good time to reflect on another kind of independence—the ability to live life on our own terms.
Good health plays an important role in maintaining independence as we age. Whether it is spending time with family, traveling, volunteering, enjoying retirement, or simply remaining active in our community, healthy choices today can help preserve quality of life tomorrow.
One of the most effective ways to protect your health is by preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can increase the risk of vision loss, heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and reduced mobility. The good news is that small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
Regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, maintaining a healthy weight, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress can all help reduce your risk. Early screening is also important because many people with prediabetes do not know they have it.
This year, as we celebrate America's 250th birthday, consider making a commitment to invest in your health and future independence.
Through UNC Health Wayne’s Diabetes HealthCheck, free diabetes risk screenings, educational seminars, and a year-long diabetes prevention program are available to our community. If your organization is interested in hosting a free screening event or seminar, or if you would like to participate in our diabetes prevention program, contact Billy Tart at billy.tartjr@unchealth.unc.edu to learn more.
