Spring in Wayne County

Since moving to Wayne County spring has been one of my favorite times of year. Nowhere I have lived previously quite testifies to the full resilience of life that surrounds me. Wayne County blooms with an amazing show of color, fragrance and flavor second to none. If one is listening closely, a low hum can be heard in the background that is almost electric as the forests appear to awake from its winter nap and all creatures great and small begin there cycle of renewal. Flowers and grasses peek out from unexpected and expected locations, farm equipment shows up on the highway and we note fields bursting with new life.

Strawberries are one of the first seasonal crops ready for harvest; red, ripe and sweet they bring to mind that elusive memory of strawberry picking as a child and that perfect bite of sweetness straight from the vine. As fruit and vegetable stands begin to appear, my mouth waters in anticipation of the array of fresh produce with flavors that can only come from the soil of Wayne County.

If you haven’t yet experienced springtime in Wayne County, plan a drive shortly after dawn and experience the quiet beauty of day breaking in the country, take the family strawberry picking at one of the counties local farms, or stop at a local produce stand and bring home a sampling for your table. Then, observe as that transformation of the season springs up in you!
