Scouting Develops Leaders of Tomorrow

Local Tuscarora Scout and Wayne County First Responder Jordan Kornegay had an incredibly unique privilege this past month. Since 2010, NC Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby has helped organize the BSA Report to the State, highlighting annual accomplishments of Scouts across NC. There have been themes each year, such as 100 years of Scouting or military. This year’s report featured Scouting alumni from NC who are First Responders.

Mr. Kornegay was asked to speak to the group in attendance in the chambers of the NC Supreme Court on a Monday afternoon during February. Later that evening, Justice Newby invited Jordan to deliver the address to the NC House.

Jordan spoke on the influence that Scouting and his family had on his career and life choices, and the integral part that the Scouting program played in introducing him to interests and developing skills that have prepared him as an outstanding young leader. The Well of the House is the podium for invited guests, such as the Governor, Chief Justice, or the POTUS, and Mr. Kornegay reports that “I am beyond honor and still dismayed that I was allowed this unique experience.”

Jordan is currently a student at the East Carolina University College of Business. He was joined by Edgecombe County Deputy James Silver, a product of the Exploring program; and Ian Beatty of Currituck, NC, a Scout who performed a water rescue while on a sailing trip in Elizabeth City; in being personally escorted by representatives who were Eagle Scouts or the parents of Eagle Scouts to the Well of the House for the annual Report to the State address.
