Mrs. Tart has over 22 years education experience, and has served as a Grantham School and Grantham Middle principal since 2006. Mrs. Tart began her education career in 1994 as an English/language arts and social studies teacher at Forest Hills Middle in Wilson, North Carolina, and joined Wayne County Public Schools in 1996 as an English/History teacher at Rosewood Middle/High. In 2000 she became Assistant Principal at Rosewood Middle and in 2002 became principal at the school. In 2006 she transferred to Grantham School as principal. It is worth noting that in 2011, Mrs. Tart was both the Southeastern Region Principal of the Year and a National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) National Distinguished Principal. Mrs. Tart holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in middle grades education. She is also certified as a school administrator and a Curriculum & Instruction Specialist.

Wayne County Public Schools Title I Coordinator, Dr. Damesha Smith, will replace retiring Brogden Middle principal, Sylvester Townsend. Dr. Smith has 13 years education experience and has served in her present position since 2013. Prior to coming to the WCPS Administrative Offices, Dr. Smith spent three years as the elementary curriculum specialist at Eastern Wayne Elementary. Prior to Eastern Wayne Elementary, Dr. Smith served as a Teaching and Learning Coach for the WCPS Human Resources Department. She also served as a Literacy Coach and a teacher at Brogden Middle School. Dr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in history education, a master’s degree in school administration, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership.

“These two school administrators will bring to their new schools a diverse set of experiences, strengths, and backgrounds,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, superintendent. “I look forward to working with them in their new roles, and supporting them in their efforts to bring out the very best in their students and staff.”

No replacement has been named for Mrs. Tart. The principal changes will take effect July 1.
