Police: Tips led to arrest of teen in security guard's death in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A 16-year-old high school student has been charged in the shooting death of a security guard who was working at a Greensboro grocery store.

Police tell news outlets that tips from the community helped investigators identify the teenager, who was arrested at his home Tuesday without incident. The Associated Press typically does not identify juveniles charged with crimes.

The boy is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 8 shooting death of 51-year-old Anthony Charles Smith of Winston-Salem.

Police say the suspect walked into the store, fatally shot Smith once in the back of the head and stole his weapon. He took nothing else.

Investigators do not have a motive in the shooting and Smith's firearm has not been recovered.
