New Laws Take Affect Today in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Laws governing the disclosure and release of police body and dash camera videos aren't the only new laws taking effect in North Carolina as the calendar turns to October.
All or portions of more than 20 laws take effect Saturday, including the ways the public can seek access to police video footage. That law has received attention since the fatal shooting of a man by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
Other new laws require small-scale "beach bingo" operators to get a state license and mandate the creation of a "blue alert" system alerting the public when help is needed finding a suspect who kills or seriously injures a police officer.
Another law prohibits third parties who operate education web sites and services for public schools from disclosing or selling student information.
