North Carolina's Fall Litter Sweep Underway

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Folks are sprucing up the highways and byways of North Carolina.

The annual fall Litter Sweep campaign of the state Department of Transportation is getting underway this weekend and continues through Oct. 1.

Volunteers from Adopt-A-Highway groups, local businesses and civic organizations work together during the sweep to collect litter from the state's highways.

Last year, volunteers collected nearly 850,000 pounds of litter, enough to fill 60,000 trash bags.

Next month, after the campaign ends, the Department of Public Safety launches its "Litter Free NC" enforcement campaign cracking down on litterbugs.
