Ex-Winston Salem High School Coach Admits to Having Sex With Student

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A former Winston-Salem high school basketball coach accused of fathering a child with a now-former student has pleaded guilty to sex charges.

News outlets report 33-year-old Lloyd Derrele Mitchell pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of sex offense with a student and indecent liberties with a student and was given a probationary sentence.

He resigned as the head boys' basketball coach at West Forsyth High School in June 2015.

Mitchell is accused of having a sexual relationship with a then 18-year-old student at the school while he was coaching there in 2012.

Police began investigating when the victim reported the affair last summer. A birth certificate and paternity test shows the victim gave birth in December of 2012.

Mitchell also has to register as a sex offender for 30 years.
