Hornets Take SU's Richardson No. 22 overall, will head to Kings
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets have selected forward Malachi Richardson from Syracuse with the 22nd overall pick in the NBA draft, but he will be dealt to the Sacramento Kings.
Sacramento acquired the rights to the pick after dealing veteran shooting guard Marco Belinelli to Charlotte, a person familiar with the situation said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the trade won't become official until July 7.
That meant the Hornets had to make the pick for the Kings.
Richardson averaged 13.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Orange, who reached the Final Four. He was the MVP of the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional.
Richardson shot 35 percent from 3-point range overall, but 42 percent in ACC games.
