When Do You Believe Life Begins? By Dan Wroblewski, Publisher

The decision to have an abortion is protected under the Constitutional Right to Privacy. In the 1973 landmark case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court allowed this core constitutional principle of privacy and liberty to a woman's ability to terminate a pregnancy.

I normally try to stay away from writing about politics and topics like the above. I’m not here to argue whether an abortion should be legal or not. As stated that right was given to all women decades ago. What I would like to discuss though is when do you as a human being believe life begins?

I’ve been seeing for many weeks horrific videos of human embryos and fetuses being cut up or partially crushed and according to the Center for Medical Progress, sold for profit by Planned Parenthood. Federal law prohibits this practice and if found true, Planned Parenthood should be held accountable for their actions.

After watching these videos, a question was brought to the forefront for me as to if true, is Planned Parenthood actually “baby killers?” I know this is a tough subject for many people and actually one that I have not really given a lot of thought about recently till the last few months. With that said, I’ve always thought that life begins at conception or gone as far to think maybe when a heartbeat is first heard.

The fact is a heartbeat should be able to be heard by a transvaginal ultrasound during the 5th or 6th week after conception. Even though sometimes it cannot be heard at that time it does not mean that the baby is not alive. Ah, now we have another problem. When is the embryo or fetus actually considered a baby?

There are many opinions on this matter with no real scientific evidence to prove either way. Some scientists and doctors say a baby is not a baby till the baby is entirely outside the Mother’s body. Others say at conception. Some say at 6 weeks. 38 states have fetal homicide laws while 23 of those states have fetal homicide laws that apply to the earliest forms of pregnancy to include conception. North Carolina is one of those states.

All I can tell you is that watching the cruel videos from the Center for Medical Progress has made me think more and more about the selling of baby’s body parts and when life truly begins. Abortions may be legal but are they moral?

If you have an opinion on abortions or the selling of baby parts, please feel free to email me at dan@thebuzzaroundwaynecounty.com. I’ll be glad to share your opinion with our readers.
