14th Really Chili Challenge Coming Up
After an unplanned break caused by the pandemic, the Community Soup Kitchen’s Annual Really Chili Challenge will resume its tradition Saturday, October 26, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in downtown Goldsboro at the John St. parking lot (100 block of North Center Street).
Hunger did not take a break during Covid 19; therefore, neither did the Soup Kitchen, thanks to Executive Director Doricia Benton, Kitchen Director Susan Britt, a small group of faithful volunteers, and loyal financial supporters. Benton actually served sandwiches from the back of a truck in the early stages of the pandemic.
Board members and other volunteers accept donations at the exit of Sam’s Club two weekends a year including October 4-6 this year. Potential contributors receive letters during the year seeking their gifts. However, the only real fundraising event is the Really Chili Challenge.
The 581 South Band will entertain this year while the chili simmers. Winners will be announced by 2:00 for Best Chili (first, second, and third place), People’s Choice (by donations), and Best Booth. Winners compete for original prize bowls created and donated by local potter Randy Wright.
Interested cook teams and sponsors can register by calling 919-731-3939. Cook team fee is $75.00. Tickets are available at the gate for $5.00. Children under 5 are admitted free.
