Wayne County Extension Master Gardeners Reflect on 2019 Volunteer Achievements

On January 23rd the Wayne County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers enjoyed an evening of good food and fellowship while being recognized for their volunteer contributions in 2019.  In 2019, 29 Extension Master Gardeners volunteered over 2,800 hours and provided over 1,800 citizens in Wayne County with gardening information. 


The guest speaker of the night was Whitney Phillips, horticulture instructor at University of Mount Olive. Ms. Phillips spoke on great plants to brighten up the winter landscape.


The following Extension Master Gardener Volunteers were recognized for their volunteer contributions in 2019: Karen Brashear, Brenda Carter, Darlene Duffley, Ken Dunn, Gloria Flowers, Anthony Green, Cathy Green, Al Grisette, Freeman Hardison, Missy Ingle, Pamela Johnson, Audrey King, Bob Lake, Donna Lee, Sue McClenny, Charles McLendon, Linda McLendon, Eileen Nesti, Cassandra Newsome, Jessie Norris, Virginia Pickles, Bonnie Pitzer, Allie Price, Bob Richards, Pam Silver, Janice Simmons, Brenda Volk, Ervin Watts, and Brenda Wilkens.


The following Extension Master Gardener Volunteers received additional recognition for reaching volunteer hour and years of service milestones in 2019: Anthony Green for 250 hours and 5 years of service; Cathy Green for 1,000 hours and 5 years of service; Bob Lake for 250 hours and 5 years of service; Charles McLendon for 2,000 hours; Linda McLendon for 6,000 hours; Jessie Norris for 2,000 hours; Bonnie Pitzer for 500 hours; Bob Richards for 5 years of service; Ervin Watts for 1,000 hours and 30 years of service; and Brenda Wilkens for 2,000 hours.


Seven Extension Master Gardener Volunteers completed their internship in 2019 to become certified Extension Master Gardeners. They were: Karen Brashear, Darlene Duffley, Gloria Flowers, Al Grisette, Missy Ingle, Donna Lee, and Sue McClenny.


Along with the Extension Master Gardeners being recognized for their volunteer hours and service, the 2019 Wayne County Master Gardener Volunteer Association Officers were installed.  The officers for 2019 are Bonnie Pitzer - President, Freeman Hardison - Vice President, Cathy Green - Secretary, and Sue McClenny - Treasurer. 


Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are the ones who volunteer for NC Cooperative Extension. Volunteers are trained to assist their local county extension office to provide practical information to gardeners of all ages on home lawns, landscapes, and gardens. Volunteer opportunities include answering questions in the extension office plant clinic, holding mobile plant clinic at various community events, holding a Spring garden festival and plant sale, holding a 4-H summer youth gardening camp, and working with Wayne Regional Agricultural Fairground gardens.
