Red Cross Offers Workshops for Children of Military Families at Summer Camps

RALEIGH, June 14, 2016 —This summer, the American Red Cross is partnering with Camp Corral – a nonprofit that provides free summer camp experiences to children of wounded, disabled or fallen military service members – to roll out its new Reconnection Workshops program designed especially for military kids.

Reconnection Workshops teach children essential life skills to help them better manage stressful social situations and cope with the unique challenges they face growing up in military families. Workshops are facilitated by licensed behavioral health professionals who are trained to work with children. In Eastern North Carolina, Camp Corral will be hosted July 3-8 by the Eastern NC 4-H Center in Columbia, N.C.

One of the campers who will benefit from this new program is Mackenzie Dunbar. Mackenzie’s father is a disabled Army veteran who endured two roadside bombs in a Humvee and now suffers from PTSD and a decreased mental capacity. Mackenzie will join her three siblings at Camp Corral this summer hosted at the Eastern 4-H Center, one of four camp locations where the Reconnection Workshops will be held.

Media outlets interested in covering the camps/program can contact Marissa Pierre at 336-553-1706, or email mpierre@rlfcommunications.com.
