Man dies while climbing waterfall at DuPont State Forest

DUPONT STATE FOREST, N.C. (AP) — Officials say a man has died after falling 50 feet from a rock at High Falls Waterfall in DuPont State Forest.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney tells local media outlets that 20-year-old Daniel Howard Schoren Jr. of Mill Spring died after he fell just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mahoney says Schoren was hiking with his family when he tried to climb up the face of the waterfall beyond a sign marking "No Rock Climbing." Mahoney says he lost his footing and fell to the bottom.

Authorities are still investigating. Officials say this is the third death on waterfalls throughout Transylvania County in the past month.

In March 2015, another man survived after falling 50 feet from the waterfall.
