Additional rains threaten Hatteras roads, campgrounds

BUXTON, N.C. (AP) — Officials with Cape Hatteras National Seashore say recent record-breaking rain on Hatteras Island has impacted beach ramps, campgrounds and roads, and more rain is expected this weekend.

A statement from officials says there is approximately seven to eight inches of standing water at Cape Point Campground, making it inoperable. The campground's online reservation system for Cape Point has been paused for seven days.

After a week, park staff will assess the campground and determine if it's safe to allow visitors to reserve camping spaces.

While officials say there are no plans to close any ramps due to standing water, people using a ramp on Hatteras Island are urged to use their best judgment. The ramps most heavily impacted by the recent rainfall are 43, 44, and 49.
