My Way Vs. God's Way By Terri Hollowell

Last month I shared that we were in the process of moving and how I was finding things I had forgotten I had. One of those “treasures” was a cassette tape – yes, a cassette tape - of Frank Sinatra singing “My Way”. I loved that song. Or, maybe it was just Frank Sinatra’s voice. Regardless, I lived by the message in the song - “I did it my way”. And oh, the mistakes I made! All of us like to do our own thing and have complete control over how we live our lives. The “me” factor in us wants to do things our own way and it wants everything to go the way we think it should. Then we get upset when something doesn’t go our way.

The Book of James is very direct about how we should be living our faith – and it isn’t “my way”! In fact, I can assure you that if I had done it God’s way when I was younger, my life would be very different now. In Chapter 3 James tells us: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” (v.13-14; 16)

My life has changed significantly since those memorable years of the late sixties and seventies. I’m thankful for the hard lessons that taught me to do it God’s way, rather than my own. Yes, I sometimes get off course – we all do. But God’s way opens the door to a much more peaceful and orderly life.
